Symposium
Contribution
In this presentation the author compares curriculum and pedagogy of teaching linear inequalities in Beijing classrooms, that is comparing the guiding principles in the China Mathematics Curriculum Standards (CMCS, 2002) with their ‘implementation’ in the classroom. The analyses are focused on the coherence between the intended curriculum and the implemented curriculum, the modes of pedagogy, and connections to traditional Eastern and Western influence. The research is based on the ten Beijing lessons videotaped in March and April 2006 on the instruction of linear inequalities. The results show that all requirements on content and pedagogy stipulated in the CMCS standards were complied with, and that the mathematics content was generally more than those required. Whilst the CMCS had adopted many western pedagogical strategies, teachers felt uncomfortable with these, and most instruction reflected the traditional Chinese mathematics education pedagogical practices.
