Symposium
Contribution
Kulturelle Teilhabe" (cultural participation) is a widely used term, although its theoretical implications (and significances) are vague. Furthermore, it remains unclear what activities and perceptions of primary school children may be interpreted in terms of cultural participation. However, instrumental instruction can be seen as "cultural capital" (Bourdieu, 2001), as a basis for cultural participation, or - going beyond that - as a form of participation within the environment of school. This exploratory study focuses on the question, which musical activities, in a broad sense, have an influence on cultural participation. How is cultural participation influenced in the particular case of the JeKi-program? For this purpose drawings with the topic “my experiences with music” of the children are gathered. Included are also parents’ diaries, photographs, and interviews with teachers, children, and their parents. This gathering takes place in 2nd and later in the 4th grade to capture the development. The material is analyzed on the basis of qualitative content analysis (cf. Mayring, 2008). The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of patterns of cultural participation of primary school children and the impact of the JeKi-program on this.
