09 SES 01 C, Linguistic Super-diversity in Urban Areas: The Challenges and Resources of Linguistic Super Diversity in Practice – Empirical studies (Part 1)
Symposium, to be continued in 09 SES 02 C and 09 SES 03 C
Contribution
This contribution draws on ongoing ethnographic fieldwork in and around a Chinese complementary school in the city of Eindhoven in the South of the Netherlands. It is part of a larger HERA-funded research project investigating discourses of inheritance and identity in four multilingual European urban settings. Our part of the HERA project focuses on Chinese adolescents who are, among other things, voluntarily engaged in learning Chinese. It therefore starts from observations, interviews and document analysis in Chinese classrooms and follows the participants into their families, youth groups, and the broader Chinese community. It aims at finding out how Chinese-Dutch youngsters in a superdiverse urban Dutch environment deal with being Dutch and Chinese at the same time. Our contribution will focus on the other- and self-ascribed ethno-linguistic identities of Dutch-Chinese youngsters in the formal, institutional context of a complementary Chinese classroom and in the more informal context of the “Asian and Proud” section of the social networking site Hyves (the Dutch alternative for Facebook). We will show how Dutch-Chinese youngsters negotiate super-diverse identities in the official monoglot space of the Chinese language classroom and compare this with how they talk about their identity/ies in the freer, polylingual space of an online discussion forum.
