Symposium
Contribution
The study SIGrun (Studie zum Instrumentalunterricht an Grundschulen [Study of Instrumental Instruction in Primary Schools]) is a longitudinal evaluation of the effects of instrumental instruction in primary schools within the “JeKi” programme (Jedem Kind ein Instrument [An Instrument for Every Child]). One of the main research questions focuses on whether musical instruction leads to a positive classroom climate, school satisfaction and a positive perception of the self-concept. These aspects are well described in literature and are all linked to school achievement (Tiedemann et al. 2004).
The quantitative data were gathered by questionnaires. In summer 2011 the data of the first three measuring points of the study (first measuring point without instrumental instruction and the following two with instrumental instruction) will be available. The structure of this interrelation will be tested by using structural equation modeling. Socio-economic status as well as the time of musical lessons and cluster effects will be controlled for by multilevel analysis (Schwippert 2002). It could be assumed that children, who participate in instrumental instruction compared to children without extra promotion gain concerning their self-concept, the classroom environment and school satisfaction.
