09 SES 01 C, Linguistic Super-diversity in Urban Areas: The Challenges and Resources of Linguistic Super Diversity in Practice – Empirical studies (Part 1)
Symposium, to be continued in 09 SES 02 C and 09 SES 03 C
Contribution
Linguistic diversity within the societies is the actual reality in Europe. This reality is largely neglected in the European public sphere – and at the same time cultural and linguistic diversity is celebrated at many occasions. What causes the European “linguistic Janus face”? - This question is the starting point for our contribution to the symposium. We will then present data about today’s societies, and namely their urban centres, that show the actual diversity in linguistic, cultural and social terms - as far as possible in the current state of data collection in Europe. We then present the "Super Diversity” reference frame as a theoretical starting point for capturing social positioning by means of the dynamic interplay of linguistic, cultural and social phenomena which exceeds the magnitude and present understanding of complexity in societies. This concept may allow for a change of perspectives: towards the development of adequate and appropriate models of research as well as teaching of languages in the complex social environments of today’s societies. Finally, our contribution will introduce briefly to the symposium as a whole.
