Contribution
The SPRABILON project is the first German longitudinal study on the bilingual development of migrant children. The project uses language proficiency data which is collected three times in two years of schooling. A sample of children age 11 to 13 is being observed. Within the framework of the SPRABILON project a tool to determine oral language production is currently being developed in cooperation with the University of Vienna. This paper presents the steps of development and the evaluation criteria. The aim is to identify language competence of bilingual students in several fields of language (e.g. semantics, pragmatics, morphology) and to get considerations of language acquisition processes in German and for children with Turkish and Russian backgrounds: in both languages. In addition, preliminary results derived from the first wave of data collection will be presented. The improvement and evaluation of the tool will make a contribution to empirically supported individual assessments. Using this tool will be enable us determine specific strengths and weaknesses of student’s oral language proficiency that can be used to design individualized support for each student.
