09 SES 13 C, Collaborative Problem Solving in the 21st Century: Definitions and Assessment
Symposium
Contribution
The construct of collaborative problem solving is analysed to draw attention to the contributions made by the two major dimensions and their elements, dependencies between these, and identification of elements unique to the construct. ATC21S sees collaborative problem solving as a 21st century skill which is a combination of its component parts. The parts are collaboration, problem solving and the new technologies currently believed to characterise the 21st century. Collaborative problem solving is particularly useful where complex problems require solution. An intrinsic component of the process is the accumulation and exchange of knowledge, skills, and expertise of the collaborating individuals. How these commodities are accumulated and exchanged in 21st century qualitatively different environments than in the past, is still largely an unknown. Media-rich environments where the availability of different media for collaborative problem-solving pose a new element in the mix. Given this context, the roles of elements within the construct are analysed in order to identify their unique contributions to the over-arching construct. Data are drawn from Singapore in order to investigate the independence and dependence across the collaborative and problem solving dimensions.
