Paper Session
Contribution
Reading difficulties in adulthood are not only problem of marginalized population groups. The results of literacy surveys (Varik 2009, Ehala, Kerge, Lepajõe & Sõrmus 2010) at Estonian universities showed a significant proportion of university students having difficulties in functional reading skills. According to UN Convention on Rights of People with Disabilities (2006) access of students with special needs, including students with reading difficulties, to higher education has been improved. The majority of students with reading difficulties also have problems with reading in their adulthood and therefore they need assistance in order to acquire appropriate learning strategies and to be able to cope with the requirements set by the university (Hargreaves 2007, Pre, Gilroy & Miles 2008).
The main research questions were:
- What are the literacy skills of university students?
- What kind of support the university students with reading difficulties have needed or received?
- What kind of support the students with reading difficulties lack in their further education?
- Which learning strategies the university students use for coping with their university studies and how do they use such strategies?
