09 SES 03 A, Findings from PISA: Reading and Literacy Issues (Part 3)
Paper Session
Contribution
International studies (PISA, TIMSS, and PIRLS) have begun implementing the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) into their data gathering. In Slovenia, implementation of electronic questionnaires is scheduled for the study PISA 2012. Two questions occur; whether students’ knowledge and command of ICT have a significant impact on the data gathering process and how we can prepare for possible problems during the implementation of electronic questionnaires. Competent use of ICT among students is not a matter of course. With the article we will find out how literate are Slovenian student in ICT. With ICT literacy we have in mind the OECD definition “ICT literacy is the interest, attitude, and ability of individuals to appropriately use digital technology and communication tools to access, manage, integrate, and evaluate information, construct new knowledge, and communicate with others in order to participate effectively in society”. We will evaluate ICT skills, with regard to demographic indicators and test scores, using data from the study PISA 2006 and PISA.
These data gives us the basis for our research question. Are Slovene students highly ICT literate? Is there a difference in ICT literacy between Slovene students and students from other countries and is the difference statistically significant? Our research focuses on finding differences and similarities between Slovene students and students from other countries which take part in PISA study
