Session Information
09 SES 02 D, Using the ICCS 2009 International Database for Secondary Data Analysis (Part 1)
Research Workshop - followed by training session in 09 SES 03 D
Contribution
The workshop provides an overview of the available data sets, methods, and analysis procedures used in the latest IEA study – the International Civics and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS; Schulz, Ainley, Fraillon, Kerr, & Losito, 2010). Conducted in 2009, ICCS investigates how well young people are prepared to undertake active roles as citizens. Civic knowledge and contextual background information from students, teachers, and schools are available from 38 countries, plus three regional modules - Asian, European and Latin American.
The workshop will introduce participants to the complex sampling and survey design that necessitates careful analysis of ICCS 2009 data. The instructor will be on-hand to field questions about ICCS 2009 and general questions concerning the administration of LSA.
Participants will be provided with a structured framework for evaluating hypotheses, including the definition of the theory, model specification, and critical test. A significant component of the workshop will be hands-on, allowing participants to evaluate several hypotheses using IEA designed software that appropriately analyzes the complex data sets of ICCS 2009. The software will be provided to the participants free of charge.
The target audience are graduate students and researchers at all levels who are interested in international issues concerning international large-scale assessments (LSA), as well as secondary data analysis of LSA in civic education.
Overall, it is the intent of the workshop to provide researchers with the overall rationale and theoretical framework underpinning ICCS 2009 while also providing a set of tools for unraveling some of the complexities of the data sets and addressing specific research questions.
