12 SES 09, Enabling Educational Research
Contribution
In the meantime, educational media are used digitally all over the world. More and more schools are embedding multimedia technologies such as notebooks, tablets or whiteboards and national and international educational policies like the European Commission’s ‘Digital Agenda’ are actively supporting innovative practices. Amid this upheaval, the conventional printed textbook is replaced by a variety of digital options. Among them are a many PDF textbooks as online versions, others are with interactive videos. Open educational resources (OER) can be revised, shared, and used by anyone. These developments in the textbook production stretch the definition of ‘textbook’ and make it necessary to ask for new textbook characteristics in the digital age.
To explore the changes of textbooks, the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (GEI) is currently extending its research and research infrastructure. With reference to GEI’s thoughts about features of digital textbooks, the presentation focuses on their immateriality and non-linearity as fundamental questions for research and a suitable research infrastructure.
The requirements for a digital textbook archive and challenges to make it available for research in the long term will be presented. Building up an infrastructure that incorporates the diversity of digital textbooks is a matter of licences, copyright and data management. Furthermore one core attribute of digital textbooks is that they are constantly updated. If historical research needs to archive all versions for the future we have to find ways of archiving older multimedia versions. It is tricky as long as the publishers see no need to keep these accessible. The pressing question of the presentation is less whether the textbook will disappear and more about how infrastructure can support educational research by facing the digital shift.
