Contribution
The secondary-tertiary transition in mathematics is a complex issue for educational research. It can be, and has been, studied with various foci: on thinking modes; on organization of knowledge; on proof and mathematical communication, on didactical transposition and didactical contract. Some authors consider that the key point is that mathematical knowledge is more abstract at university; others draw attention on mathematical practices, resembling more and more those of professional mathematicians; others retain as a central aspect the change of institution: the university has specific rules and expectations, framing the mathematical content proposed, and generating gaps with secondary school etc. Each positioning entails specific interpretations of novice university students’ difficulties. It leads to identify different possible origins for these difficulties, and to suggest different means of didactical action. I will present here the different views of secondary-tertiary transition yielded by these different theoretical perspectives, whose articulation can contribute to enrich our understanding of this complex issue.
