Professional development in Germany usually comprises of one day, one off events which in general have little impact on day-to-day teaching practices. Teachers often expect to be "trained", reflecting the German tradition of transmission teaching in the classroom, and to be provided with many materials for immediate use in classrooms. Attendance is usually allowed during the school day with some teachers being really interested in the topic but for others it merely provides a possibility to get away from the routine of the school day.
Whilst modelling is an integral part of the local curriculum and is partly integrated into assessment it still seemed very complicated for teachers to adopt and adapt the new pedagogies associated with this area of mathematics. Although, in general, the 5-day professional development course was considered positively, it was criticized for being too long (with Heads of schools finding it hard to let teachers attend for five days) and for supplying too few teaching materials.
In contrast to other cases the German case will be not analysed using one particular theoretical framework but within the general theory about mathematical modelling and professional development with the paper presenting results of analysis of the German evaluation data.
