09 SES 13 A, Students' Engagement and Performance in Reading and Orthography: Reciprocal Relations and Effects of Instruction – Part 2
Symposium
Contribution
Engagement in reading is important for reading skill and for functioning well in school and later in life. The current cross-sectional, longitudinal study examines the development of reading engagement in 85 elementary schools in the Netherlands. Children are followed from Grade 3 to Grade 4 (N = 1382) and from Grade 5 to Grade 6 (N = 1474). Multilevel regression analysis was used to examine the factors that influence reading engagement. Most important results are: (1) in line with Chall’s (1983) fourth-grade slump, the reading engagement declines at the end of elementary school, however, (2) whether this happens and to what extent depends on gender, reading skill, home literacy environment and the characteristics of the school library. Finally, the limitations and practical implications for education are discussed.
