Call for Applications to the NW24 1st Season School on Mixed methods in mathematics and science education research (STEM)

Mathematics Education Research (NW24) likes to encourage contributions relating to all fields of mathematics education research, and in particular those comparing across regions and cultures.

Aims of this season school:

  • Promote excellent training in mixed methods to PhD candidates and other scholars in mathematics education research.
  • Create a space for participants to discuss with senior researchers in mathematics and science education about research and share examples based on their expertise.
  • Encourage networking and include young researchers in the European scientific community of mathematics education researchers.

Rationale:

Quantitative research has been largely used to do international assessment and testing, such as PISA, PIRLS or TIMSS, which results have a strong impact even in political decisions. Qualitative methods also are widely used by researchers to analyse in depth how individuals are able to solve problems, use algorithms with understanding, represent / display data, etc.

Educational research has an important impact on our society. For this reason, we need solid knowledge about methods, to avoid poor practices.

In Europe we have the great opportunity to have a large community of educational researchers associated to EERA through ECER. This is a perfect setting to organize a season school to address this topic and promote excellent training for future researchers in education.

The title of the season school is: Mixed methods for mathematics and science educational research (STEM).

The theme of this season school is discussing quantitative and qualitative methods in educational research to increase the rigour, reliability and excellence of the research conducted within this field (STEM).

Having in mind that the methodology is probably the most important aspect in our work as researchers, since the reliability of our discussions, conclusions and contributions depends importantly on how accurate are we in using the methodology, the idea is to provide a setting to PhD candidates and other scholars to receive a high quality training in research methods, focused on mathematics education.

The season school will offer:


Keynote speeches with some of the most prominent experts in qualitative and quantitative methods in Europe. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss with them innovative methodological approaches, instruments, data analysis, how to design research programs, etc. All participants will have also the possibility to present their work, receive feedback from the audience, and listen to the contributions of experienced scholars in the field of mathematics and science education.

Who can attend?


The target groups include:

  • PhD candidates in mathematics and science education research
  • Other scholars in mathematics and science education research

There is no tuition fee, but participants must cover their travel costs (transportation). Accommodation and meals (breakfast and lunch) would be provided by the organization. Costs for other social activities will be covered by the Season School organization as well.
