In 2015, co-Editors, Lori Diane Hill and Felice J. Levine introduced the inaugural volume of the World Education Research Yearbook series. The WERA Yearbook presents a collection of the strongest research papers considered and disseminated by the World Education Research Association (WERA). As an association of national, regional and international education research associations, WERA was established to go beyond what any individual association could achieve in its own country, region or area of specialization.  The collective ambition of the Association is to undertake initiatives that are global in nature and to catalyze, stimulate and lead in ways that promote the use and application of rigorous education research and build capacity and interest in the field around the world.  This aim and ambition were central motivators for WERA’s new annual.

The central message of the response of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) to the High Level Group’s recommendations is that EERA is happy with the inclusion of the third recommendation about education. However, we consider that the background of this recommendation is too limited and that, unfortunately, the vital role of educational research for improving education and society has been ignored. We believe an opportunity is being missed to incorporate within the 9th Framework the role of education and educational research as a critical source of solutions for the great societal challenges of our times; (youth) unemployment, migration, terrorism, (social) inequalities, and political extremism.
