ECER 2017, Bolzano - Invitation for Contributions

We invite all researchers who are interested in gender inequality across all stages of education to submit contributions to the Gender and Education Network (GEN).  

The Bolzano EERA conference theme is Inclusion and Exclusion, Resources for Educational Research. This provides a broad framework through which to address topics relating to gender inequalities in education, including the theoretical and methodological challenges for gender researchers. The main objective of the GEN is to strengthen collaboration between researchers from different disciplines and educational fields. The aim is to improve the quality of gender research and to acquire a more comprehensive view of gender inequalities in education.

We invite submissions to the GEN that address the following two themes at any level of education and in formal or informal schooling:

1.    Gender inequalities in education.
Submissions could include but are not restricted to the following topics:  

  • The relationship between gender inequality in society and gender inequality in education;
  • The gendering of educational institutions;
  • The role of the concepts of inclusion and exclusion in promoting gender equity in education;
  • Gendered learning, teaching, curriculum and pedagogy;
  • Gender and academic achievement;
  • Gender bias and stereotypical subjects, disciplines and career planning;
  • Issues beyond the gender binary;
  • The intersections between gender, social class, race, ethnicity, sexuality and disability;
  • Gender inequality in the EU and at national level.  


2.    Theoretical and methodological issues.
Submissions could include but are not restricted to the following topics:

  • Theoretical innovations and transforming gender inequalities in education;
  • Methodological innovations in gender research;
  • Education, men’s studies and theories of masculinities;
  • Feminist and intersectional approaches;
  • The challenges of interdisciplinary research in gender and education;
  • The challenges of new research themes in gender and education.

The aim of this second research theme is to stimulate critical inquiry into theoretical approaches and research methodologies and to contribute to the development of innovative theoretical approaches and research methodologies in the field.

In addressing these and other challenges connected with gender inequalities in education, the GEN is open to different formats of conference participation, e.g. paper presentations, symposia or posters. The research topics above could form the basis of symposia topics but we welcome alternative proposals.

GEN is planning joint sessions with the network on Didactics (NW27), the network on Inclusive Education (NW4) and the network on Social Justice and Intercultural Education (NW 7). These networks also have a focus on gender inequalities in their fields of research.
