Contribution
This paper presents an ethnographic study of information practices applied in five different educational research projects. Recently a broad scope of terms has been used to capture the capacities of information technologies in scholarship and research funding programmes, e.g. e-Science, e-Research, e-Infrastructure, Cyberinfrastructure, Virtual Research Environment, Science 2.0 and Research 2.0 - to name just a few. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of research data (Baker, Bowker 2007; Bowker 2000a;b) and its sharing are described as a conundrum respectively information and science studies are seen as a desideratum in the social sciences and humanities (Borgman 2012).
The above mentioned research gap is analysed in detail in a comparative study of five research projects operating in the same field, i.e. educational research in schools. Current data practices are investigated following their materialisation in interacting environments. The field of educational research is suitable for analysing the heterogeneity of research data in their environments offering a diverse set of research styles and apparatuses of various disciplines characterised by the same phenomenon. Thus an information study could be realised which contrasts a broad scope of research methodologies and disciplinary relations, focusing on similar research objects: educational research in schools. To capture the heterogeneous research data and their interactions with research environments and apparatuses, a performative practice approach was conducted.
