Contribution
Even though art education always has had to legitimize itself in relation to society, nowadays more than ever it is on the brink of having to rethink its foundations. A first event that forced art education to reposition itself is the Bologna Declaration of June 1999, which put higher education in Europe for entirely new challenges. A second event, which is a consequence of the first, is the development of the School of Arts in Flanders, in which higher art education is supposed to do research in the arts, in collaboration with universities.
In this paper I wish to contemplate on these two events, and what they bring about concretely for the daily praxis and possibilities of art education. The starting point to realize this aim are conversations with students of LUCA school of Arts – Campus Sint - Lucas, as a particular case. These conversations, however, are not being held to bring to the fore specific problems Sint - Lucas has to cope with. Neither do they take place to reach a common ground where the needs of the students meet the new policy guidelines. The concern has much more to do with offering clarification and depth regarding the necessity of taking position. The hypothesis is that (art)students are active participants in the recent developments, who continually address new subject matters, instead of being followers or trend setters who beforehand have already conformed to what the history of art, the work field, society, the market or politics desire. Therefore, as less as possible, claims are made in advance. The focus of the conversations is on why, where and who. What are the reasons that students, docents… people go to art education? What are people doing in art education and what are their intentions? And who and what determines what they do?
In this research there is consequently not only a focus on the actual experience of the School of Art. Simultaneously a model of thought is being tried out for a new pedagogical - artistic approach of art education. For this aim, the conversations are filmed by docents and students of Sint Lucas. In short, in this presentation not only student voices are made public, also the artistic model/method that makes this possible will be presented.
