Session Information
23 SES 14 D, Research Evidence to Policy Making
Symposium
Contribution
Background: Since 2009 we have been investigating the links between decisions at the school-level and local school improvements and the utilization of accessible or collectable evidence. As part of this research we have developed descriptive knowledge on how evidence is used in local and school level decisions, in particular in relation to systems for school improvement. Part of the research is funded by the European Social Renewal Operational Programme (TÁMOP) 3.1.1 Research questions: In this presentation we focus on: (i) What types, models of datasets are utilized by municipal-level education policy-makers when making decisions on school or system improvement? (ii) What are the characteristics of the mediators, links, channels between local decisions on school/system improvement and available evidence? (iii) What is the formal and informal role of school principals in the mediating processes? (iv) To what extent are local policy-makers ready to change their practices in utilizing evidence when deciding on (supporting) school/system improvement? Methods: We used a set of interrelated methods/mixed methods including case studies and surveys on representative samples. The research is limited to elementary schools teaching 1-8th grade students in Hungary. Conclusions: The findings in relation to the four research questions will be presented.
