06 SES 02, Current and Future Perspectives on Media Competence, Media-Bildung, and "Literacies"
Symposium
Contribution
This presentation seeks to explore various descriptions of media education as it has been described in MA in media education curricula internationally. Media education is a new subject at university level and there are only a handful of universities in the world offering whole degree programmes in media education. The concepts of media education (Buckingham, 2003a, 2003b, 2007; Rowe, 2004) and media literacy (Tisdell, 2007; Alvermann & Hagood, 2000; Kupiainen & Sintonen, 2009; Kellner & Share, 2005) have been defined and researched over last three decades. However, there are still some conceptual problems connected with both of these concepts. By analysing the existing curricula we want to highlight both the commonalities and differences between different degree programmes. Research questions asked were: 1. How do MA in media education programmes define media education? 2. How much of the analysed media education programmes are involving ICT? 3. What is the relation of the existing programmes with other academic fields of science? MA–level curricula in media education programmes was analysed through qualitative textual analysis. The expected outcome is a clearer picture of media education programmes at the Master’s level around the world. This should help to conceptualise media education definitions in higher education.
