Session Information
22 SES 13 C, Higher Education Graduates at the World of Work – the Third Round (Part 2)
Symposium, continues from 22 Ses 12 C
Contribution
Increasing demand on Higher Education to “deliver” employable graduates is discussed in relation to influences from the surrounding society. We study how different societal conditions influence career development and private life for recently graduated teachers. It is a comparison of two countries with different welfare regimes; it is the “sub-protective” Spain and the “universalistic” Sweden (Gallie and Paugam, 2000). Societal conditions can for example be the state of the labour market, e.g. available positions, or length of workdays, and the welfare support, e.g. jobseeker's allowance, or parental leave. The empirical basis for the comparison and discussion is a questionnaire and interview study of teachers graduated from the University of Extremadura in Spain, and national register data of teachers graduated in Sweden. The individuals are around 30 years old and they have graduated three years earlier. It is their current labour market position, and their family situation that is analysed.
