Paper Session
Contribution
In recent years studying relations between people and places has gained more interest among scholars and educators (Edwards & Usher, 2007; Tuan, 2001; Mendel, 2006), establishing such educational theories as place-based education (Smith, 2002) or critical pedagogy of place (Greenwood, 2003). There is, however, still a puzzle of how the focus on place can be reconciled with increased intenational migration (Jayanandhan, 2009).
This paper aims at contributing to this area, focusing on recent migration and mobility within the European Economic Area. It is based on a qualitative study (an ethnographic study and 30 semi-structured interviews) with Polish adult migrants in Reykjavik. The research focuses on migrants' mutual relation with the city – how they feel it influences them and how they influence it. Special emphasis is put on learning – migrants were asked what they felt they had learned from the place and what they could or did teach others living in the city. Another question in the study was related to adult education institutions in Iceland and the role they were playing in shaping the relation between people and places.
