Round Table
Contribution
Departing from the topic of social inequalities in European higher education the focus of this roundtable is to identify successful study patterns of students with non-academic family background in different European countries. The theoretical framework of “space, time and habitus” is to show the inevitable relatedness between the macro and the micro dimension. Focusing on Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway and the Czech Republik societal possibility-structures will be described and analyzed due to differences resulting from diverse socio-historical contexts. According to these different socio-historical contexts space and time constitute on the macro level a general cultural habitus-formation that might be identified in structures and institutions of higher education organizations (by each partner). With respect to the micro level (the concept of) student biographies with non-academic family background will be discussed – regarding time, space and habitus – to identify possible “success criteria”. This mixed method design including quantitative and qualitative approaches shall do both giving a broad description and explanation as well as analyzing social-cultural differences in depth.
