Symposium
Contribution
In the context of the model program entitled ‘Support for Immigrant Minority Children and Youth’ several tests resp. procedures to measure bilingual children’ s language level were developed. One of these is the instrument for observation and evaluation of German as a second language. This instrument serves as a basis for observations concerning spoken as well as written language of children acquiring German as a second language in multilingual classrooms. Teachers of all school subjects are able to estimate children’s language achievement by observing them with support of the tool ‘Language Level Descriptors. As a result teachers gain knowledge about the individual achievement level – and by means of this: the achievement composition in their multilingual classrooms. Additionally, the instrument motivates and supports teachers’ cooperation for the joint design of learning environments and lessons which take linguistic diversity in the sense of diversity of achievement into account. This paper presents the architecture of the descriptions, which are still at the experimental stage, as well as preliminary results of empirical hedging and field trial, which takes place since 2006.
