Contribution
In this paper I report on leading cultural change in small, rural schools in Western Australia in the context of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI-WA). This initiative is a partnership of the Australian Government, and the States and Territories that supports schools and their communities to embed sustainability within their culture. While many WA schools practised elements of education for sustainability in the past AuSSI-WA takes it to the next level by encouraging the use of sustainability as a key context for teaching and learning as part of a whole school approach. Participating schools are supported by a framework and planning processes that enhance successful practice by developing a streamlined, coordinated approach. As part of this process, school communities are encouraged to reflect on their values as they create a shared vision for a sustainable future. I use the Huberman and Miles (1984) framework to discuss leadership for cultural change. In undertaking this evidence based research I investigate participant perceptions of the introduction, leadership strategies selected to embed change, the shared leadership experience within participating rural schools and compare these findings with experiences in the European setting.
