Session Information
20 SES 10 A, ‘Super-Diversity’ in Urban Areas and their Schools: Research on Multilingualism and Multiculturalism
Symposium
Contribution
The presentation is based on the research conducted within the German ‘Regional Excellency Cluster’ LiMA (Linguistic Diversity Management in Urban Areas), which aims at bringing together existing expertise in multilingualism from a linguistic as well as educational sciences’ perspective and combining it with the investigation of migration-induced multilingualism as found in urban areas worldwide. The research is clearly international in scope. It examines whether and in what way migration-induced multilingualism can be translated into advantages for individuals and society and into benefits for the cultural and economic development of urban centers. The city of Hamburg serves as a model for international comparison of similar urban centers. The initial part of the paper will thus describe the research questions of the cluster, its structural organization and the different methods used for data collection. In a second part of the presentation, an intended “Linguistic Development Panel - LiPS” will be presented and discussed. Panel studies are suitable for both considering the various complexities the research subjects are exposed to on a daily basis as well as, at the same time, trying to determine the impact these complex influences have on human linguistic development.
