The easy and effective information retrieval is one of the key elements of international co-operation in education. At the ECER conference 2009 in Vienna "WERA – the World Education Research Association" was founded. The WERA symposium in Vienna was addressed to the cumulative knowledge, the advancement of theory and the research rigor in education research.
In order to achieve these aims and to enable educational researchers all over the world to have access to current information stored in databases, repositories etc. information specialists have to provide a user-friendly access to these data.
One of the possibilities is the use of thesauri for describing the contents of the stored documents in a controlled language which afterwards gives the users the possibility to find the information on the topics they are interested in.
One of the big challenges in the field of education is the fact that – though a high percentage of scientific studies are written in English – a considerable and therefore not negligible quantity is written in other languages. Scientific co-operation in European educational research cannot disregard this fact.
The paper will deal with two European education thesauri: European Education Thesaurus (EET) and Thesaurus of European Education Systems (TESE). Other possibilities of information retrieval (ontologies) will be considered.
