07 SES 12 B, Family Practices and Orders of Migration
Symposium
Contribution
This contribution develops pedagogical perspectives on the intergenerational processing of familial migration experiences. To this end, we take on two cases from two consecutive research projects (funded through DFG). Using an ethnographic approach, we examined the younger generation’s education as a social practice (cp. Krinninger, 2015; Krinninger & Müller, 2015; Müller & Krinninger, 2016). Further, two families with migration experiences are part of the overall sample of both projects. Different construals of migration appeared within the shaping of family life. The interpretation, based on case analyses, and comparison of both cases show different ways in which the families offer options for development and social chances to their children through educational effort. Speaking from educational science, it is important to differentiate these ways according to their originality instead of establishing hasty hierarchies. Moreover, this appears critical with regard to discourses in family policy, as they tend to present the overlap of factors such as poverty and migration as an educational risk. Yet, on the basis of our two cases, we are able to identify not only dispositives followed by the families in their practices, but also potentials that are easily overlooked when academic achievement is the only standard drawn upon in the consideration of familial educational milieus.
