Session Information
07 SES 12 A, Global Teaching: Southern Perspectives on Working with Diversity
Symposium
Contribution
This paper introduces southern perspectives on working with diversity (Connell 2007) in education and compares perspectives to social justice and intercultural education in Europe (Bhatti and Leeman 2011) and the ‘new world’. In this discussion an introductory comparison of the contexts in the south and the north will be included to foreground the contextual dynamics shaping perspectives in the symposium. This symposium emerges from a book (Reid and Major, 2016), which forms part of a broader series on Global dialogues with/in the global south (Reid Ed, Palgrave Macmillan). Reid and Leeman build on their work of a decade ago (Leeman and Reid 2006) in which they, using a critical multicultural framework (May 1999), based on a literature study including policy documents, publications on empirical research and publications on approaches to multi/intercultural education made a comparison between Australia and the Netherlands. For this symposium they update their work to the present.
