Paper/Video Session
Contribution
Vielfalt, I like is a video film I created together with youth from migration families. It centers on the topic “school in the migrant society” (Rudolf Leiprecht et al.). The film is based on findings from my dissertation “Marginalisiert? Zur Relevanz von Migration im urbanen Bildungsprozess” (‘Marginalized? On the Relevance of Migration in Urban Educational Processes’, 2013) and explores these research questions:
1) How does a ‘new middle school’ in Austria deal with migration in a marginalized urban neighborhood?
2) What plans for their future lives do the pupils envision and bring into the school environment?
3) What skills and competencies do teachers need in order to grasp the diversity associated with migration and to engage with it in practice hands-on?
To answer these questions, problem-focused interviews (Andreas Witzel) were conducted on camera with young people and educational researchers (including Paul Mecheril). In the interviews, the guiding perspective was that migration is actually movement, and that movement in this sense can be equated with education. Migration is also linked with a new orientation and drives processes of reflection. The underlying theoretical pre-assumptions are that schools in the migration society and “cities open to the world” (Erol Yildiz) thrive on such dynamics. For this reason, it was intriguing to investigate to what extent the school that was filmed utilizes this form of education as a resource.
On the whole, the present research and the film shows how the plans for life of youth from migrant families in a marginalized urban neighborhood and an innovative school environment interlock, fitting together, and why migration can be understood as an urban educational process. The aim of my video presentation is to thematize and discuss this focal topic.
