Chrappán Magdolna – Németh Nóra Veronika Theory and Practice of a Competency Framework for School Leadership One of the main roles of a school leader is to create a good, supporting and creative environment for the teaching and learning process. Generating and operating effective management and an optional learning environment can be seen as a reflection of the school leader’s quality and competencies. In our research – considering the European Union’s requirements in connection to the competency fields of school leadership – we used a competency matrix of five items: (1) competency of managing and controlling of the teaching and learning process, (2) the question of changing managing systems, (3) the school leader’s self-control on a different field of school life, (4) competency of communication with colleagues, parents, students and all the other actors within school life (even stakeholders etc.) and (5) the competency of dealing with everyday problems based on maintaining and running the institution (schools, kindergartens). In our research we collected data (examples, good practice) from 236 teachers for the above mentioned competencies of school leaders. The database was analysed qualitatively (choosing keywords, making categories). Our results gave us feedback about the main problems of the Hungarian school system and provided different solutions for addressing challenges. Through the school leaders’ competencies we can become familiar with the challenges of the learning environment and problems connected to school system changes in the last 3 years. The information about problems and solutions related to competencies of school leaders is very useful for the teaching and learning system and improving the effectiveness of school governing. With the help of our results we can improve our teachers’ training and the teachers professional development systems, finding new trends for school leadership.
