Contribution
Swedish research is user, process or product oriented. User oriented studies illustrate the use of textbooks, to what extent they are steering planning and contents and how they are selected and valued. Process oriented studies describe the process preceding a final textbook and product oriented studies how contents respond to national goals and guidelines.
Studies show that textbooks are dominant but mostly completed by other materials. The level of ICT use is high and has in combination with problem-based learning brought about rejuvenation to school work. Type of teacher, teaching style and subject primarily decide the use of educational materials. Basic view on education is a factor behind teaching style, with consequences for pupils´ way of working and learning. Two attitudes are standing out: to take interpretation of goals, methods and choices of tasks in the textbook for granted. Textbook is central, other materials are complements. Or to take goals and qualifications of the pupils as starting points for a course of study. The goals are central. A variety of materials are chosen to reach them.
