SLO, the Netherlands Institute for Curriculum Development, yearly monitors the use of learning materials in primary and secondary education. The latest study shows that most teachers heavily rely on textbooks and the accompanying task books in their teaching. Difference in orientation and use is related to school characteristics and subjects affiliation. For example, in schools that emphasize student centred pedagogy teachers make more use of digital, flexible and self made teaching materials. Additionally, the findings show that those teachers that rely less on textbooks for organizing their teaching, find it difficult to create and insure continuity and coherency both in their own curriculum as with other year groups and subject. This kind of coherence and continuity seems to be more often guaranteed when using textbooks, which makes their use more appealing and convenient to teachers. The presentation will focus on how textbooks and other learning materials are used in Dutch school, current developments and how teachers perceive this issue.
