From an analysis of the most popular selling textbook in England, it became clear that relatively impoverished mathematics was being offered to pupils compared with their counterparts in France and Germany. From a small sample of users taken from 10 schools in England, it further seemed that teachers mediated the ideas offered to pupils and, in particular, further limited the learning opportunities offered to low attaining pupils. Of additional concern was that low attaining pupils often did not have access to textbooks outside lessons. This is a significant cause for concern although caution needs to be exercised given the small sample involved. The research points to the need for a larger scale study.
