How applicable are recommendations from a systematic literature review of traditional classroom practice?
Insights for developing inclusive pedagogies with new technologies and within virtual worlds.
A three year long UK government agency funded international systematic literature review examined pedagogical approaches for including pupils with special educational needs in mainstream classrooms. Each year of the review had a specific focus. The final year looked at whole class, subject based pedagogies with reported outcomes for the academic and social inclusion of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream classrooms. The systematic literature review derived five key features which characterized successful learning in these situations: Prioritising social engagement, Presenting materials flexibly in a range of modalities, Scaffolding student learning, Providing authentic activities, and Participating in a pedagogic community. This presentation discusses these outcomes of this review and critically considers how successfully these findings have been used to examine and inform ways in which new technologies and virtual learning environments might facilitate inclusive education. As the potential for technology to influence educational practice increases it is important to consider the usefulness of research outcomes from existing mainstream classrooms in designing and evaluating new practices. A key question is whether this research acts to inform educational innovation or to constrain it by transferring existing constructions of; inclusive education into our "future"; practices.
The intent of this discussion is to address this question by drawing on examples encompassing Second Life (a 3D virtual educational environment), weblins, robotics, and Tablet PCs.
