Contribution
The first attempts to document educational research on a large scale conducted in European countries were made by the Council of Europe's Documentation Centre for Education in Europe in the 1970's.
The EUDISED-database was founded (European documentation and information system on education. For the indexing and retrieval of the documents in the EUDISED–database the EUDISED–thesaurus was compiled. The number of thesaurus languages increased from three (English, French and German) in 1973 to 11 (Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish) in 1998.
From 2001 to 2004, the PERINE database was compiled in the framework of the European Educational Research Association and financed by the
Fifth EU - Framework Programme for the promotion of educational research. Eight European countries participated in this project: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Switzerland and United Kingdom. The aim of PERINE was and still is to create a platform for educational researchers to find information on and to get in contact with the providers of educational research infrastructures.
In 2006 the European information network on education (EURYDICE) took up again the European Education Thesaurus having been for many years a joint venture of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Its new name is TESE – European Thesaurus on Education Systems. It is currently updated and used for the indexing and retrieval of documents in the EURYDICE database. The next edition is scheduled for 2009.
