Session Information
Contribution
After the example of last years Conference (Angelo Van Gorp's presentation of some of Ovide Decroly's psychological films dating from the 1920s) we would like to continue our interest in visual sources by organizing a workshop on film - documentary or non-documentary which indirectly addresses the history of education. This reflects a commitment to experiment with widening the diversity of means of generating knowledge and interest in the histories of education at the Conference sessions of Network 17. The topic of this workshop is 'films about alternative schools', focusing on films related to New Education and the New school Movement (e.g. New Education Fellowship), Progressive Education, éducation nouvelle, Reformpädagogik, etc. The organizers of this workshop will show themselves some fragments of films, but scholars attending the workshop are invited to bring along their own material. Whether we will organize one or two sessions will depend on the number of contributors. The workshop will try to find answers to questions such as- How can we use this kind of films within the history of education? - What can we actually 'do' with these films, as a visual (historical) source? - How do we have to 'read' these films? What do we actually 'see', and what do we not see? - Which factors (related to the 'text' as well as to the 'context') do we have to take into account? - Why these films have been made? - Which audiences the makers of these films had in their mind? - What did one want to do with these films (goals)? - Are these films 'real' or 'fake'? - Which criteria do we have to take into account to enable a proper analysis of these films?
