Prelude to a History of Educational Journals Britten Ekstrand Kristianstad University, Sweden In an ongoing extensive study of what educational research is and historically has been concerned with, according to what has been published in educational journals worldwide, new questions has been raised and new fields grow. The empirical material has opened possibilities to in broad outline a (not the) history of educational journals. This first step to a history of educational journals is a web based project. Infrastructural developments have laid the foundation for this new form of historical research. The theoretical framework is grounded in the epistemological theory of Bourdieu (2004) and research in the field of educational research and history. Brian Simon (1994) is one of influence in the last mentioned sense. The material is collected and collated out of sources that have been composed from the following ten databaseso Academic SearchElite/EBSCO o ERIC o IngentaConnect o Social Science Citation Index o Ulrich´s Periodicals Directory o DOAJ-Directory of Open Access Journalso Electronic Journals Library o Emerald o ISI web of Science o Library Information Science & Technology Abstracts Out of about 1000 peer-reviewed educational journals a sample of 264 journals has been selected. This sample is given a description according to the year the journal started, development or stagnation during the years and the actual situation. The policy, aim and direction of the journal are as well mapped out.Historical views in these matters give useful perspective on publication and educational journals as a ground for communication and discussions nowadays. A history of educational journals can as well be a contribution to the discussion about the educational discipline, its development for more than a hundred years and its territory. Questions about power and knowledge are raised and not at least questions connected to educational journals as places for researchers to meet and communicate. Systems created for exchange of information in educational research ought to be critically scrutinized. The impact of research on further research, the dialogue and communication has to do with quality of research. The study contributes to the field of information literacy as a bonus.
