There is little research done on school banners (standards). In Norway the school banners play an important role on special events throught the year. As a rule the banners are always presented in the Children Procession on Constitution Day, May 17. Some banners are very old, others brand new. The texts and symbols on the banners reflects the philosophy, aims and goals of the schools in the period they were created. Old banners may have a well known artist as a designer, with educational slogans and national symbols. New banners may be designed by students of the school and reflect the global society. This project give an analyzes of texts and symbols of banners from primary and secondary schools in Trondheim, Norway. The aim of the paper is to elucidate the symbolism of the schol banners in a historical perspective. Our sources are school banners from more than 50 schools in Trondheim, Norway. Pictures of the banners and questionaires given to the management of each school give us information about the banners. This stage of the project will be concluded by Summer 2007. The banners are analyzed as artifacts in a historical perspective. There is a change both in the artistic expression and the texts chosen on the banners. The aim of the project is to get a better understanding of the symbolic meaning of school banners through Norwegian history. Article in a national journal, and at the end as a book.
