Contribution
The investigation centered in the students and drawn from their learning experiences, just as they are perceived and told by themselve, has some atheoric and eclectic character. However, it emerges from the convergence of different theories and models of educational psychology. The present work interferes in this perspective of the human learning based in fenomenographie and in the social-cognitive models of self-regulated learning. On a systemic evaluation and on a rigorous inventory of the situations, problems, individual characteristics and the academic context, we aim to contribute with a better knowledge of our students, their feelings, how they locate, adapt and self-regulate their learning.
Method
We reviewed literature concerning personal variable (cognitive, motivational and relationship) that we think are better located to help us to explain the quality of the student academic experiences, and self- regulation in the transition and adaptation to higher education. In the empirical part, we start studying the instruments of measure, taking the answers of 1123 students of public Portuguese higher education (Polytechnical and University) to the inventory 'ETApES' (Bessa and Tavares, 2004).
We selected a sample of 741 individuals to factorial analysis and to confirm the applied instruments. In distinguishing studies that followed we use several procedures of the descriptive and inferential statistics to characterize the restrained sample and to study the eventual simple effect and in interaction with demographic and scholar data on the average punctuations in each pointer or analyzed dimension. In the following phase, we develop and validate a structural model (holistic) for better understanding and explanation of the nature and extension of the relations between different experiences of involvement, and self- regulation and the possible influences on the school accomplishment. We appeal to the technique of the structural equation modelling (SEM) through the statistical program AMOS 5.0. The gotten solution integrates a set of 16 supported latent variables in the logic of the phases (Forethought-Decision/Volition-Reflection) of the self-regulated learning and it’s consistent with the rationale of the 3P: Pressage-Process-Product in the models SAL: Students Approaches to Learning (Biggs, 1987).
Expected Outcomes
The results also evidence a narrow relation between the personal, interpersonal and institutional dimensions implied and point to the existence of significant differences to the level of the different analyzed groups. The applied instruments have shown a high potential to evaluate levels of involvement, accomplishment and academic self-regulation in students of higher education. The main limitations of the work are connected with the complexity of the variables, to the perception approach, the statistical procedures and the difficulty in getting adequate instruments and rightfully surveyed to the level of higher education. On the basis of the reviewed literature and the reached results some future developments are suggested.
